NEWS STORY on The Pointe Community Church
The Pointe
Paint(e) Project
Mix the ubiquitous phrase “Kingdom of God”, a six-week study
on the Gospel of Matthew, modern cell phone technology, and an old fashioned emergency
and what do you get? A surprising
display of God at work in a community.
The Pointe Community Church in Fishers, Indiana is
relatively new, less than 6 months old at the time of this event. They don’t have a building of their own, the
building they rent doesn’t give them any exposure through the week, and they must
deal with ordinances that keep them and other businesses from planting signs in
the ground. But the people that call The
Pointe Community Church their home just keep plugging away.
They rent a space at The Artists’ Studio – a community
theater located in an industrial strip mall between a chiropractor and a lawn
care business. They only have access to
the building for a few hours on Sunday mornings, and spend more than three
times the hours setting up and tearing down than they do “worshipping”. The other thing that they have that separates
them from a traditional church is the relationships they’ve developed along the
way. Charlie Fehrman, lead pastor of the
plant, says the studio’s owner, David Young, “…started out as my landlord, but
now he’s my friend.” It sounds cliché,
until you hear the rest of the story.
“I was coming back from a quick trip to Atlanta when I got a
really strange text message from David. It simply said, ‘painters didn’t come, show starts in 5 hours, we need
help’. By that time I was about 250
miles away and confused, so I called David to see what was up.” Fehrman really thought the text was sent to
him in error and wanted to heckle Young.
“What I found out was that the people who were supposed to
paint his set for a new show opening at 7 pm that night didn’t show up, and he
was literally up a creek. He sent the
same text to everyone in his contact list.” Fehrman – who has helped build sets for the studio throughout the
existence of The Pointe, specifically to help build relationships with the
people in the art community – felt helpless since he was clearly too far away
to help. “I just told David I’d put out
a couple calls and see what I could do.”
Fehrman started down the list of contacts in his phone,
simply calling people associated with his congregation or in his small
group. He explained the situation and
simply said, “Can you help?” The response
was truly remarkable. After a few miles,
calls, and yes, prayers, the reports started coming in. Soon, Fehrman was back on the phone – not
begging for more help, but telling some of those he’d called earlier that they
didn’t need to come – enough people had responded that the situation was under
control. “The response I got was amazing. People either said, ‘Sure I can go now’ or ‘I
will leave straight from work.’ People
actually thanked me for calling
them.”
Fehrman eventually got to the studio, less than an hour
before the show was to begin. There were
still some “Pointers” there (that’s the term they use for people attending The
Pointe), but the atmosphere was calm and relaxed. Even David was now calm – a clear difference from
the text and phone call from just hours earlier that day. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” he said, “This
wave of people came in and said, ‘We’re from The Pointe, what do you need us to
do?’ and then they did it. I went out
back and cried.”
One of the volunteer painters said, “I had not gotten to
paint in a long time, it was fun but it really touched the owner that people
would come help. God is doing something special as The Pointe engages the
arts community in Fishers.” Another would-be painter adds, “I had stayed home
from work not feeling great when the call came in and I saw this as an
opportunity to do something selfless. I have been the recipient of the
generosity of others many times and after a quick prayer felt God calling me to
share that same spirit of generosity with The Artists’ Studio. At church we have
been doing a study about opportunities to be God's hands and feet in our world
and this certainly fit the bill.”
Fehrman had been leading a teaching series through Matthew
called “The Kingdom Experiment” in which he asked at the beginning of the
study, “What would it look like if the Kingdom of God showed up in our life?”. Hmmm. What would that look like? The Sunday morning following the “Pointe Paint(e)
Project”, there were six chairs filled with people from the art community – not
waiting to take the stage, but sitting in rows, looking for the answer to the
question, “Why would those people do that?”
Fehrman and his fellow “Pointers” believe it’s because the
Kingdom of God showed up in their lives. They continue to work to make it
contagious.
